Hon. CM Smt. Anandiben Patel Attends ‘Khadi Fashion Show’ at Sardar Patel National Memorial, Ahmedabad

Hon. CM of Gujarat Smt. Anandiben Patel today attended a Khadi Fashion Show, ‘From Huts to the High Street’ at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Memorial in Ahmedabad today, organized by The Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) in association with Gujarat State Khadi and Village Industries Board (GSKVIB).

In this fashion show, some of the country’s top designers like Anamika Khanna, Rajesh Pratap Singh and Rohit Bal showcased their high-end twist and gave an impetus to Khadi, popularised by Mahatma Gandhi.

On this occasion, Smt. Anandiben recalled Gandhiji’s view on Khadi that it is not just a mere texture, but a revolutionary idea, a whole movement. Mahatma Gandhi used Khadi as a tool to bind India together. She said that Khadi was used by Gandhiji less as a garment and more as a message, but now today’s youth have adopted Khadi as a fashion statement and is ideal for Indian weather.

In her speech, Smt. Patel explained the importance of Gandhiji’s message of Khadi as the means to economic liberation of the masses. She said that Gujarat is the largest producer of cotton and can do much for the benefit of weavers and cottage industries, if we bring this effort to the forefront. Smt. Patel also shared that production of Khadi is an exemplary medium of women empowerment. The message of the spinning-wheel is much wider than its circumference, she added.

Smt. Patel said that ‘Khadi for Fashion, Khadi for Nation’ is the new slogan our PM Shri Narendrabhai has given to us, and this can give impetus to ‘Make in India’ and ‘Skill India’ initiatives. She reiterated Narendra Modi’s urge to have at least one Khadi piece in our wardrobe, on the centenary of Gandhiji’s return to India. She proudly informed that Khadi garments worth Rs. 6 crore were sold in just 21 days during last Khadi Utsav in Ahmedabad only.

Hon. CM congratulated The Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) & Gujarat State Khadi and Village Industries Board (GSKVIB) for their efforts to sustain Khadi and promote it as Fashion Fabric.
