After successfully organizing four Vibrant Gujarat Global Investors' Summits, held in 2003, 2005, 2007 and 2009, Government of Gujarat is going to organize the fifth edition as ‘Vibrant Gujarat: the Global Business Hub' on 12-13 January 2011, at Mahatma Mandir, Gandhinagar with Japan & Canada as partner countries. Out of total proposed investment committed during these summits, around USD 17.5 billion (50 no.s of MoUs) was under Port sector.

In order to showcase the potential of Gujarat ports as coastal gateway to northern states and explore economic leverage of excellent port infrastructure, Gujarat Maritime Board along with Confederation of Indian Industry is organizing a Seminar on “Gujarat Ports: A Catalyst for India's Development” on 13th January 2011 from 9.30 to 13.30 hours at Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, India which is going to be inaugurated by Hon'ble Minister of State Shri Jay Narayan Vyas.

Whole seminar is scheduled to be organized in two sessions. First session will be dedicated to Coastal and Transshipment Shipping, exploring the opportunities in India considering its long coast line while the second session will deal with the issues and practices around the world for Port Led Hinterland Development. A brief summary of both the sessions is as under:

Session I: Coastal & Transshipment Shipping

The goods movement through sea is economically cheaper and environment friendly means of transport compared to rail and road. Currently the share of coastal cargo in total maritime trade of India is 7% while Gujarat's share is 12.4% while comparable share for USA is 15% and for EU is 43%. However, considering the long coastline of India, there is excellent opportunity to increase coastal cargo movement. Gujarat expects coastal shipping to be a major growth area.

Session II: Port Led Hinterland Development

Gujarat has a vast Northern hinterland which contributed to 30% of the total exports of India. Gujarat's ports need to provide port connectivity to support industrial development not only in Gujarat but also this northern hinterland. This requires integrated port planning along with comprehensive multi-modal transport connectivity. The Session will present the opportunity to deliberate on international best practices regarding integrated port planning considering hinterland economic profile and future port capacity requirement. It will also present an innovative financing through carbon credit and also environment-friendly port development.

Shri B K Sinha, IAS, Additional Chief Secretary, Ports & Transport Department will deliver Theme address and be the session Chairman of the I session, Mr Pankaj Kumar, IAS, Vice Chairman & CEO, GMB will deliver welcome address and be the session Chairman of the II session. Renowned International speakers Mr Enda Collellan, Advisor, Dublin Port Company, Gorden Rankine, Director, Beckett Rankine, UK, Sholomo Breiman, CEO, Israel Ports Company, Jerry Bridges, Executive Director, Virginia Port Authority will present papers on different subjects.
