Gujarat CM addresses “Sustainable Development Goals Roadmap for Gujarat” workshop in Gandhinagar

Gujarat CM Smt. Anandiben Patel delivered an inspiring address at the Sustainable Development Goals Roadmap for Gujarat workshop in Gandhinagar today. United Nations introduced the Sustainable Development goals in 2015 keeping in consideration the future generations. CM Smt. Patel expressed her confidence that the state government will remain committed to achieving these goals.

Explaining the importance of the workshop, CM Smt. Patel said that planning and implementation both should be looked after responsibly as planning alone doesn’t achieve any results. She added that to achieve these goals by 2030, the contribution of different department of the government, organizations, Social and educational organizations, experts as well as citizens will be very important.

On the occasion, CM Smt. Patel informed that Gujarat has achieved significant success in relation to Millennium Development Goals. Noteworthy improvement has been seen in the number of people living below poverty line, dropout rate in primary schools, gender gap, EMR, MM etc. She further added that since the last 15 years the state government through its result oriented works has looked after the development and growth of every citizen.

Talking about the need to properly examine the possibility of applying local solutions to global problems, CM Smt. Patel informed that in every sector regardless of whether it is eradication of poverty or conservation of forest resources, confluence of modern technology with local techniques is required.

Talking about water management sustainability, CM Smt. Patel said that the state government has developed a water grid network in the state, which can easily be called the largest in the world.

In addition to that, there is 2670 km of bulk pipelines in the state and a total water pipeline network of 1 lakh 20 thousand 769 km. There are over 23,000 reservoirs in the state and stress is laid on conservation of rain water, she added. Till now, a total of 1 lakh 60 thousand check dams have been built in the state and depths of over 25 thousand 600 lakes have been increased.

Talking about sustainability in the field of agriculture, CM Smt. Patel said that agriculture is a very important field and we should always strive to increase production in agriculture and ensure adequate availability of food grains in the nation. With an aim that new technological advances in the field of agriculture reach to the farmers of the state and to make them aware about modern techniques, many schemes and initiatives have been implemented by the government. Stressing on the need to adopt organic farming and the increasing demand for organic produce, CM Smt. Patel informed that the state government has decided to establish the first organic farming university of the nation in the state.

Detailing the steps taken by the government to eradicate poverty, Cm Smt. Patel said that the government has adopted the approach to deliver the benefits of GaribkalyanMelas straight to the beneficiaries. Also, Gujarat has achieved the goal of bringing down the number of people living below the poverty line to 19.81% before 2015.

Cm Smt. Patel talked about the government’s commitment to the welfare of citizens and said that the government is dedicated to providing health cover to its citizens. Instead of health insurance the state government has adopted the approach of health assurance and started initiatives like MA and MA VatsalyaYojana. Over 35 lakh families have been enrolled under these two schemes. In addition to that, the government has initiated free diagnosis and treatment of diabetes for citizens.

Stressing on the importance of having a balanced environment, CM Smt. Patel said through collective forestation, the tree cover area in the state has been increased to 4.04 which was reported to be 2.06 in 2001. She added that the state government is still working to further improve the number through collective efforts. Moreover, the state has initiated a revolution in green energy in the whole nation by setting up the first roof top solar power plant of the nation. In addition to that, a 600 MW capacity solar park has been set up in Charanka.

Moreover, she informed that the state government introduced Solar Policy – 2015 to promote usage of solar energy in domestic as well as industrial applications.

CM Smt. Patel informed that our mantra is SaunoSaath, SaunoVikas and VasudevKutumbakam is our culture. Mother Earth has provided a lot to us and still provides us with countless resources, so we should repay our debt to mother earth through collective efforts in conservation of environment and sustainability.
