Clearing up the state government’s role on High Court’s verdict regarding reserved seats in village panchayat wards, Gujarat government spokespersons Health Minister Jay Narayan Vyas and Minister of State Saurabh Patel said that state government honours the judiciary and constitutional spirit in the first priority.

Spokespersons said the High Court’s verdict is in relation to the interpretation of Article-243(D) of the Constitution of India, Article-9(5) K(1) of the Gujarat Panchayat Act and the rules of the year 1994 regarding the allotment of reserved seats in village panchayat wards. But these rules were framed by the then Congress government in 1994. Since then three general panchayat elections were held in the state in the year 1996, 2011 and 2006 in line with these rules. The present government has also not made any changes and has not made amendments against any community in these rules during last ten years.

Spokespersons said the present state government firmly believes that panchayat election is a healthy democratic process and political disputes can not have its place in it. The present government fully backs the constitutional provision for the reservation and is committed to never step back in this regard.
