Gujarat government has constantly endeavored to ensure economic prosperity of the farmers of the state by increasing the production and productivity of agricultural produce through science and technology. The government’s commitment to always stand by the side of farmers and a sensitive approach towards their problems and issues is the reason why Gujarat, a state plagued by infrequent and inadequate rains has remained at the forefront in agricultural sector in the country for the past 1 and a half decade.

With a commitment to provide an impetus to the development of farmers, Gujarat government under the leadership of the first woman Chief Minister of the state, Smt. Anandiben Patel has announced a comprehensive “Agro Business Policy 2016-21”. Under this policy, by developing agricultural clusters, the whole value chain from the farm to foreign countries will be strengthened. Novel efforts would be made for more value addition to agricultural waste; which would prevent wastage of agricultural produce and also provide additional income to farmers.

Food processing units as well as agricultural infrastructural projects would be provided with various kinds of assistance under the new policy to ensure that the farmers of the state get the maximum benefits of the high demand of quality agricultural products all across the world. The purpose behind this policy is to ensure that various crops and fruits cultivated in the state undergo quality processing, agricultural produce last longer, and it gets exported on a large scale.

In the agro food processing sector, Gujarat’s “Amul” is the most successful model in the whole world. Moreover, over 10 lakh people provide employment by the 30 thousand food processing units present in the state. Under this new policy, many new opportunities for employment will be generated for rural youth and women due to the progress of Agricultural industries.

Hon’ble CM Smt. Anandiben Patel herself is the daughter of a farmer and she has always given high priority to the welfare of farmers. Under her leadership, the state government has introduced a budget for the year 2016-17 which gives priority to development of farmers and villages under which various provisions have been made for developing the infrastructural facilities in villages, provision of crop loans and crop insurance to farmers at a marginal rate etc.

CM Smt. Patel says that, “It is my dream to make Gujarat’s farmer a global farmer. I am eager to witness ‘international class’ agricultural produce grown by farmers of Gujarat in the soil of Gujarat being sold in markets across the world. ” Agro Business Policy 2016-21 is an important step towards realizing that dream.
