Gujarat Government’s historic decision: 10% reservation announced for economically backward classes of general category

Gujarat Government under the leadership of Hon’ble Cm Smt. Anandiben Patel announced 10% reservation for economically backward classes of general category today. Currently, 7% reservation is allotted to scheduled castes, 15% to scheduled tribes, and 27% to OBC which would remain unchanged. Moreover, the reservation would be given to all those who belong to non-reserved categories and whose income is Rs. 6 lakh or less. An ordinance would be issued for the same on the 1st of May.

The benefits of the proposed reservation scheme would be applicable from the new academic year beginning in June 2016. CM Smt. Patel expressed her confidence that this historic decision will open up many new avenues of progress for numerous students and job candidates belonging to non-reserved categories.

CM Smt. Patel assured that implementation of the ‘Mukhya Mantri Yuva Swalamban Yojana’ would remain unchanged and youth will also receive the benefits of 10% economic reservation.
