Gujarat CM Felicitates Cleanliness Workers for Their Selfless Service at Surat

Gujarat Chief Minister Smt Anandiben Patel attended a unique cleanliness workers’ felicitation program at Surat last evening.

Lauding the service of the municipal street sweepers, CM Smt Patel said that the street sweepers not only keep our surroundings clean, they actually play a more important role of protecting our environment and health. In my view, our sweepers are the real torch-bearers of ‘Clean India’ movement and it is our responsibility to recognize their service, she added. She also shared that the state government is sensitive about the welfare of this community and suggested municipal corporations to create a corpus for the welfare of their families. She informed that necessary things like long brooms, mask and gum-boots are provided to them for their convenience and to ensure lesser strain and protection from infection. Moreover, their periodic health check-up is also carried out by the state government, she said.

CM Smt Patel stated that to keep our cities clean and beautiful is our collective responsibility and we must take inspiration from our street sweepers to do our bit for the society. She also said that it is also the responsibility of the government and the society to take care of the health and education of the families of these selfless service providers.

Talking about the challenge of garbage disposal, CM Smt Patel told that we must now focus on recycling of increasing waste to save the mankind from its negative impact on nature. Presuming the shortage of street sweepers in the future, she warned that we will have to develop alternative system for public hygiene and cleanliness as the young generation will hesitate to do this socially lousy job.

Appreciating the job of municipal street sweepers, CM Smt Patel stated that instead of Mayor or Municipal Commissioner, sweepers should be sent to accept the award for cleanliness as they are the most deserving people who sincerely keep our city clean. While congratulating the Surat Municipal Corporation for organizing such unique program, she suggested arranging felicitation program of cleanliness workers by all the municipal corporations and municipalities.

Talking about the goal of open defecation-free Gujarat, CM Smt Patel stated that now when we are about to achieve 100% in-house toilets in our cities, the state government is going to impose fine on those who defecate in open. She stated that cleanliness is not only the responsibility of the cleanliness workers, it is the responsibility of all the responsible citizens. Referring to Gandhian thoughts about cleanliness, she said that outer cleanliness is not only kind of cleanliness, mental cleanliness is equally important for our overall well-being.
