400 Schools across Surat to Adopt Rainwater Harvesting System To Battle Scarcity

SURAT: About 400 villages of Umarpada, Olpad, Kamrej and Mangrol talukas in Surat district were facing water scarcity because of poor monsoon last season. However, they should no more. This is because these villages have realized the importance of water conservation. A small village of Kosmada in Surat district’s Kamrej taluka had showed the way. It began with the primary school of the village becoming an eco school.

This has inspired 400 other schools in these many villages of the district to follow suit, official sources said.

The primary school in the village has become an eco school

Kamrej taluka panchayat president Raju Modi said, “Eighty-four tribal children were drinking water directly from the taps. They were not only drinking impure water but wasting it too. We had got a rooftop rainwater harvesting system installed as a pilot project in Kosmada village school. Now, we plan to install this system in all the 65 schools in our taluka. This system installed by Sujalam Eco Solutions Private Ltd will help recharge the underground water level.”

The pilot project was funded by former village sarpanch Natu Banker. The self cleaning maintenance free rooftop rainwater harvesting system has cost Rs one lakh. The rainwater on the rooftop is collected through 100 feet pipeline and diverted to the filter. Clean water is passed to a 5,000 litre capacity underground water tank. A hand pump is fitted on the sump to draw water.

District development officer Remya Mohan had inaugurated the pilot project in the district on June 14.

She said, “No government grant has been given to the panchayats. Villagers have taken up this initiative on their own. They realize that conservation of natural resources is a must. Rooftop rain harvesting systems will be installed in the parched villages of Olpad, Umarpada and Mangrol with the help from local donors soon.”
