Chief Minister Shri Narendrabhai Modi, today, disbursed the first instalment of the component-Rs. 562 Crores, under the ‘Swarnim Jayanti Mukhyamantri Shaheri Vikas Yojana' to Municipalities and Municipal Corporations'. He called upon the People's Representatives to promote what they stand for, to foster an environment conducive to promote healthy competitions for development.

In the run-up to the Golden Jubilee celebrations, Chief Minister had inspired the 3.5 thousand representatives to play a significant role in realising the vision of ‘Swarnim Gujarat', making honest and meticulous efforts providing excellent amenities and facilities to citizens.

In a landmark initiative, Gujarat has opted to emphasise for all-round development of urban-centres. As part of the initiative, Gujarat has launched ‘Swarnim Jayanti Mukhyamantri Shaheri Vikas Yojana'. It is covering 7 Municipal Corporations and 159 Municipalities; it is an ambitious scheme to enhance the people-centric governance, backed by special grant of Rs. 562 Crores. Today, Chief Minister had disbursed the 1st instalment at Sabarmati River Front.

The function was organised by the Department of Urban Development. Mayors of Municipal Corporations and Municipalities, Members of Parliament and MLAs attended the function.

Dedicating a special Web-Portal-(Samay-Dan Web-Portal), Chief Minister claimed that State Government has made available adequate resources to them.” With the leadership acumen, you may play a leading role in transforming the image of our towns and cities,” he expressed his confidence.

Chief Minister listed out the challenges faced in the last decade. Around forty percent of our total population is depending on urban amenities. After carefully considering all the factors, State Government celebrated the year 2005 as ‘Urban Development year', mandated to bring qualitative-changes in urban amenities and the services provided to the citizens. Achievements demonstrate Gujarat's abilities; it came as inspiration to others.

Chief Minister revealed, “The Scheme seeks to provide total sum of Rs. 7000 Crores, out of that the first instalment of Rs 562 Crores is being released today. If we take a look, the 2001 –Budget had allocated just Rs. 241 Crores for Urban Development; where as the present allocation has witnessed multifold-rise, by handing out Rs. 562 Crores from the same platform. Chief Minister asked them to prove on performance-parameters, before the 1st May. Those who can implement time-bound programme, the 2nd instalment may get released immediately. The best Corporators may win the prize, considering the merit and performance. Entire nation debates about the achievements of Gujarat. He urged the Self-Government Institutes to grab the rhythm of development.

Urban Development Minister, Shri Nitinbhai Patel outlined the theme of the ‘Swarnim Jayanti Mukhyamantri Shaheri Vikas Yojana'. He lauded the visionary initiatives taken by Shri Modiji. Under the dynamic leadership of Chief Minister, Rs. 3015 Crores have been earmarked for Urban –Development, during the current fiscal.

Principal Secretary- Urban Development Department, Smt Gaurikumar delivered welcome address.

Revenue Minister Smt Anandiben Patel, Education Minister Shri Ramanlal Vora, Forest Minister Shri Mangubhai Patel, Minister of State Shri Saurabhbhai Patel, Parliamentary secretary Shri Jaydrathsinh Parmar, eminent leaders, Senior Secretaries were among the others who attended the function.
