Quality Healthcare for Women Welfare

It has been rightly put forward by Swami Vivekananda, “There is no chance of the welfare of the world unless the condition of women is improved. It is not possible for a bird to fly on one wing.” The first step towards elevating the condition of women is to improve the quality of healthcare. Gender Equality has always been an issue close to Shri Modi’s heart and therefore he emphasized on the adequacy of healthcare for poor women to all intents and purposes!

The three main aspects of holistic healthcare for women in Gujarat initiated by the State Government are the following:

  • Introducing a groundbreaking scheme, Chiranjeevi Yojana for better access to institutional delivery for pregnant women living Below Poverty Line (BPL)
  • 108 services for pregnancy care and delivery.
  • Providing enhanced nutrition to mothers, newborns and adolescent girls through 50,226 Anganwadi Centers.

Capacity Building

With the introduction of Chiranjeevi Yojana back in 2005, 646 women healthcare specialists were registered at Primary Health Centres. The scheme adopted a PPP model (Public Private Partnership) where private healthcare facilities have been provided to women from weaker sections It is indeed a commendable outcome that 327 Primary Health Care Centres across the State are operational 24×7! Nearly 506 108 Emergency Ambulance vans are spread across every district and this service has been the greatest boon for pregnant women!

108 ServicesNumber of cases
Deliveries11.5 Lakh
Emergency Treatment to save lives2.80 Lakh
Deliveries in the Van34,000

The most exemplary achievement of Chiranjeevi Yojana has been the 7,69,000 deliveries conducted with the private medical expenses borne by State Government. The Scheme also was conferred with Asia Innovation Award, and Prime Minister’s Award, 2009. It is also been referred in UNICEF report State of World’s Children 2009 and in “Countdown to 2015 – Decadal Report 2000-2010”.

Training and Mass- Awareness at the local level

ASHA workers (Accredited Social Health Activists) have been selected from villages to create mass-awareness about children’s health, family welfare and vaccination. By 2010-11, 29,608 ASHA Workers have been working at the village levels.

The State Government has also made the most of technology in healthcare by conceptualizing E-Mamta under the Health and Family Welfare Department. With this scheme, SMS alerts are sent to beneficiaries, health workers, and district and block level authorities to monitor due services. The ASHA workers have also greatly contributed in the success of E- Mamta. With the execution of this innovative project, the Infant Mortality Rate was brought down from 48 per 1000 births to 44 per 1000 Births in 2011. In the year 2012, E-Mamta had created a database of health records of 9.5 million families and has registered 2.17 million pregnant women.

100% women-oriented initiatives!

With the support of the UNICEF, Mamta Divas has been celebrated on a fixed date to sensitize women about nutrition and healthcare. So far, 11.52 lakh pregnant women, 11,69,000 adolescent girls and 39,00,000 children have benefitted from Mamta Divas. Apart from this, adequate healthcare and nutrition has also been ingeniously communicated through Recipe Shows and the interactive question-answer program called “Hello Sakhi”.

To do away with the deficiency of micro-nutrients, nutria-candies and “Ready to cook, take home ration” has been distributed to nearly 36 lakh beneficiaries.

In the year 2005-2006, Shri Narendra Modi commenced the Beti- Bachao Campaign to curb the menace of female foeticide. It is important to note here that in 2011-12, 3,722 cases against female foeticide have been identified and the State Government has sealed 238 sonography machines.

It is indeed remarkable how the State Government with Shri Modi’s vision has taken into consideration every stage of a woman’s life while framing its policies! Quality Healthcare in Gujarat for the welfare of women is truly an commendable example of roping in village communities and private players in Government projects.
