Use of environment-friendly energy like wind and solar should be promoted – CM

Gujarat Chief Minister Smt Anandiben Patel today firmly expressed a desire to promote environment friendly energy generation through wind and solar technologies. CM Smt Patel was speaking after inaugurating Suzlon Group’s, world’s tallest hybrid wind turbine tower.

Gujarat’s present wind power generation capacity is 10,000 MW, which was merely 51 MW in the year 2002. In past the farmers were getting insufficient power supply, however, today Gujarat is a power surplus state and the farmers are getting sufficient electricity, said CM Smt Patel. She added that the world is now looking at clean and renewable sources of energy to combat climate change.

Welcoming the private energy generation projects in Gujarat, CM Smt Patel said that Gujarat government is not only eyeing the developmental vision for today’s Gujarat, but, of tomorrow too. The 20th century was belonging to the Information Technology (IT), but, the 21st century will be surely of Environment Technology (ET), she added.

Nearly one-and-half decade ago just like other states of the country, Gujarat too was highly power-shortage state and its power plants were largely based on coal and gas. But, the coal supply was of poor quality, irregular, and transportation cost was also very high. Even the gas found in Gujarat, was under the control of the Union Government. Thus, the allocation to gas to Gujarat was also meeting with a callous approach. In these adverse circumstances, Gujarat concentrated on strategic development of renewable energy resources and now it has become an energy surplus state.

Others who graced the occasion included Kutch district in-charge and Minister of State for Health Shri Shankar Chaudhary, Minister of State Shri Tarachand Chheda, GEDA Chairman Shri Ishwar Bhavsar, senior government and Suzlon officials and others.
