As part of state-level celebrations of 69th Independence Day, Gujarat Chief Minister Smt Anandiben Patel addressed Van Bandhus convention in Mahisagar district’s Santrampur town today.

Committed to empowerment of tribals, Gujarat Government has taken historic decisions for social and economic welfare of Van Bandhus in the region. On the occasion, CM Smt Patel announced that for the first time in India, 193 Van Vasahati villages (forest habitats) have either been declared Revenue Villages or merged with nearby Revenue Villages. With this initiative, Van Bandhus will be able to benefits of various government schemes. Also, tribals will get concurrent rights on the land possessed by them.

CM Smt Patel also stated that breaking away from the old custom of adding just the name of family head in revenue record, rights will now be in the name of both man and woman head of the family. Earlier, Van Bandhus could not inherit land but this decision will make inheritance possible and ensure that tribals get all benefits of all government schemes.

On this occasion, CM Smt Patel also handed over Forest Land Titles to the Van Bandhus who play an important role in preserving forests.
