On Gandhi Jayanti Gujarat Chief Minister calls for pursuing principles of Gandhiji and make our country an inspiration for the world

Gujarat Chief Minister Smt Anandiben Patel visited Porbandar and joined the Prarthana Sabha at Kirti Mandir, birth place of Gandhiji, to offer reverence to Bapu, on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti today.

On this occasion, CM Smt Patel said that it is a great coincidence that two great personalities who lived for the nation, Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri, share their birthdays.

CM Smt Patel also shared that the principles of Gandhiji have inspired the whole world and it is a matter of great pride for us that UN now commemorates this day as ‘International Day of Non-Violence’. She added that we all should try to pursue his belief of non-violence and peace and make our country an inspiration for the world.

CM Smt Patel stated that as the cleanliness was very dear to Bapu, cleanliness drive will be carried out throughout the state from 2nd October, Gandhiji’s birth anniversary to 31st October, Sardar Patel’s birth anniversary to commemorate the two towering leaders from the soil of Gujarat. She informed that as part of the drive, Gram Sabhas will be held across the state to draw an action plan to give further momentum to the cause of Swachh Gujarat.

To increase participation of children in the Gandhi Jayanti, she suggested organizing a program of poetry, talk show, plays, etc. by the children from next year. She also sought ideas from the people for unique state level celebration of Gandhiji’s 150th birth anniversary in 2019.

On this occasion, she flagged off ‘Memories of the Mahatma’ – a mobile exhibition enroute Delhi via Ahmedabad and other locations of Gandhi circuit. ‘Memories of the Mahatma’, organized by Ministry of External Affairs as part of the India-Africa Forum Summit gives an insight into the life and works of Gandhi Bapu. The mobile exhibition will connect the birthplace of Gandhiji and birthplace of his Satyagraha, i.e. South Africa, highlighting his life journey from Mohandas to Mahatma. She said that inspired from the philosophy of Gandhi Bapu, Gujarat Government has already established Mahatma Mandir, a convention cum exhibition centre, and Dandi Kutir, a museum on Gandhiji’s life and works in Gandhinagar.

During her visit to Porbandar, CM Smt Patel also dedicated various public welfare works including Sardar Patel Sports Complex, developed at the cost of Rs. 6.62 crore, as well as RTO office built at the cost of Rs. 4.78 crore and DySP City Office built at the cost of Rs. 36 lakh at Porbandar and Regional Office constructed at the cost of Rs. 3.46 crore at Kutiyana.

CM talked about the importance of the sports in the life of youth and various initiatives of the state government to provide support to amature sportspersons. She also stated that Gujarat is moving rapidly towards achieving the goal of 100% household toilets in the state and appealed to the people of Porbandar to make it the first district of the state with in-house toilet facility in every house and realize Bapu’s dream of ‘Swachha Bharat’.
