Urban Development Minister Mr Nitin Patel has expressed displeasure over Centre’s decision of not covering Gandhinagar and Karamsad cities under government of India sponsored Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) scheme.

Mr Patel said the Union Minister of State for Urban Development in a letter to Gujarat Chief Minister on September 15, refused including Gandhinagar and Karamsad under JNNURM scheme. “Gujarat government and the Chief Minister have written about 11 letters to the Centre requesting to include these cities under JNNURM but the Central government is lending no ears to the repeated representations”, he said.

Congress Mayor, officials of Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation and Congress corporators even met Mrs Sonia Gandhi and Mr Rahul Gandhi and made representations over this point. Chief Minister also personally met the Prime Minister several times in past five years and demanded to cover these cities under JNNURM, but the request has always remained unaccepted. This indicates Centre’s stepmotherly treatment towards Gujarat, Mr. Patel said.

He said that when the JNNURM scheme was approved, it was decided to include under the scheme the capital cities of every state and the cities linked with the great leaders of the country regardless of their population. By refusing to cover Gandhinagar – capital city of Gujarat and Karamsad – land of Sardar Patel under the scheme, the Central government has violated its own guidelines on the scheme.

Centre has covered other capital cities; provided infrastructural facilities and other benefits to them under JNNURM, is doing injustice to Gujarat, he said.
