AMC says, "Adopt a street" to Amdavadis

AHMEDABAD: In yet another experiment in partnering with people, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) plans to ask citizens to adopt streets and take care of their surroundings-right from taking care of the green cover to ensuring that no one litters the streets or their sidewalks. According to sources, the AMC will reveal its plan in a few days.

This model is quite successful in some US cities and has been in use since 1998. In Ahmedabad, the plan is being formulated in partnership with the city's Rotary Club.

"If you really want to make a difference to your neighborhood, here is your chance. Instead of blaming the municipal corporation for all civic problems, residential societies and corporate groups can take care of the streets. The AMC will provide them all help," said a senior AMC official.

The 'Adopt-A-Street' program envisages partnership between the AMC and people living in various commercial and residential areas. Under the scheme, groups or individuals agree to adopt an area and take responsibility for keeping its street and sidewalks, and even storm drains clean. In return, the AMC will provide free facilities and perks.

The AMC has also come up with a detailed list of trees that will be planted along central verges of roads and along the sidewalks.

More than 20,000 trees will be planted along 250 km of roads in the city in the first phase. The trees that have been selected for the programme include gulmohar, jacaranda, tabebuia rosea, spathodea, neem, borsali, kadam, and peltophorum.

"The programme envisages a cleaner, more pleasant environment for everyone who lives, works and shops in the adopted areas. It will also strengthen community ties as neighbors and merchants will work together to keep their streets clean," the official said.
